FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. Everyone needs help now and then. We consult doctors, mechanics, and contractors when we need expert input, so it makes sense to consult a professional therapist when dealing with an emotional or relationship issue. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

Education, training, and confidentiality are the main differences. A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) has earned a Master’s Degree, completed 3,000 plus hours of supervised experience, and successfully passed a rigorous licensing exam. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

How much do sessions cost and how do I pay?

A 50 minute session is $120. However, I do offer a reduced fee, on a case by case basis, so please inquire about it during our initial phone consultation. I accept cash, checks, and credit cards.

Do you take insurance?

No, I do not take insurance. However, if you have Out of Network benefits,  I can provide you with a receipt (called a Superbill) that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to find out the specific details. Please note: this requires a diagnosis code that will become part of your permanent medical record.

Why don’t you take insurance?

There are a few reasons why I do not take insurance. One issue is confidentiality. Insurance companies require a diagnosis code, which becomes a part of your permanent medical record.  This could affect you negatively when you apply for insurance in the future, including higher insurance premiums or denial of coverage. Insurance companies require information be sent to them about your session to justify payment. A second issue is that  insurance companies, if they pay, put limits on how many sessions they will cover. Many of the reasons why people seek therapy are not covered by insurance, including couples therapy, relationship issues, grief, or adjusting to life transitions. .

When are you available for sessions?

I offer sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays (morning through evening).

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling and I will recommend obtaining a medical consultation. I can also collaborate with your provider, if you request it. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. Generally speaking, we will talk about different areas of your life, depending on your comfort level. I provide a different perspective, information, validation, and support.

How long will it take?

Short answer: it depends. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success, allowing you to gain the most out of therapy.
